# How Hearts Work in Hepta

> Hearts are your play energy in Hepta. Learn how you lose one only on a fail, why tutorials are free, how hearts refill, and what to do when out.

Hearts are your play energy in Hepta. They keep things relaxed: you can settle into a level, take your time, and try a tricky board more than once without pressure.

## What hearts are

You start with a set number of **hearts**, shown as a small badge on the Home screen. Each heart is simply permission to keep playing. Because Hepta is a calm merge puzzle with no ads, hearts are the only thing pacing your play, and they're designed to stay out of your way.

## You only lose a heart when you fail

A heart is spent **only when you fail a level** — never when you win. Clear a board and your hearts stay exactly as they were, no matter how many moves it took.

<Info>
  Winning never costs a heart. You can keep clearing levels back to back without spending anything. Hearts come into play only when a level doesn't work out.
</Info>

This is part of Hepta being fair and player-friendly: the game is easy to learn and hard to master, so a level that takes a few attempts is normal, and succeeding is always free.

## Tutorial levels are free

While you're learning, **tutorial levels never cost a heart**. You can practise the basics — merging matching pieces, watching the ripple, building the target — as many times as you like. Failing a tutorial level won't reduce your hearts, so it's a safe place to get comfortable before the full set of levels.

## Hearts refill over time

Hearts **refill over time** while you're away. Step away for a bit and you'll come back to more hearts than you left with, ready to pick up where you stopped. There's nothing to tap or claim — refilling simply happens in the background as time passes.

## Out of hearts?

If you run out, you have two calm options:

    Hearts refill over time on their own. Take a break and check back soon.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Get Unlimited play" icon="infinity" href="/hepta/unlimited-play">
    Lift the heart limit for a while with an optional Unlimited pass.

Either way, your progress, best move counts, and stars are always saved — running out of hearts never sets you back.
